Ambassador Carlos-Edmilson Marques Vieira
Ambassador Carlos-Edmilson Marques Vieira is Senior Fellow of the Foundation for a World in Transition.
Ambassador Carlos-Edmilson Marques Vieira serves as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) point person to the African Union. He served as Permanent Delegate of Guinea-Bissau to UNESCO from 2002 to 2009, as First Secretary of the Permanent Delegation of Guinea- Bissau to UNESCO from 1996 to 2002, as Honorary Consul in Angola and as Head of Bilateral Cooperation at the Embassy of Guinea-Bissau in France before this. Ambassador Vieira served as Vice President of UNESCO's African Group from 2001 to 2002 and as President of its West Africa Sub-Group from 2004 to 2005.
In the 1980s, Ambassador Vieira led the Angola operations of a French trading company, which contributed to rehabilitate the coffee sector, prop up crafts and develop local SMEs, in close cooperation with the office of President Francois Mitterrand of France.
In his early years, Ambassador Vieira worked as Special Assistant to the Minister of the Presidency of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.
He serves as Vice President of the Cultural and Sports Association of Guinea-Bissau and is a a founding member of Continent Initiative Developpement, a French NGO contributing to economic development and the fight against desertification in West Africa.
Ambassador Vieira is a recognized author of several award-winning novels and poetries.
Ambassador Vieira holds a diploma in Law, a Master’s degree and a postgraduate degree in International Relations from the University of Paris and a postgraduate degree in Law and the Practice of International Affairs from the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis.
A Knight in the National Order of Merit of France, Ambassador Vieira is also the recipient of the Gold Medal of the Ligue Universelle du Bien Public. He is the nephew of the late President Joao Bernardo "Nino"Vieira of Guinea-Bissau.
